Cataract

What is a Cataract?

A cataract is an eye condition in which the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, causing blurred or dim vision. The lens is normally clear and helps focus light on the retina so we can see clearly. When a cataract develops, it blocks or scatters light, making vision unclear—similar to looking through a foggy or dusty window.

Cataracts usually develop slowly and are most common with increasing age, but they can also occur due to other reasons such as injury, medical conditions, or long-term medication use.

Common Symptoms of Cataract

People with cataracts may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Blurred or cloudy vision
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Increased sensitivity to light or glare
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Faded or yellowish colors
  • Double vision in one eye
  • Frequent change in eyeglass or contact lens power

If left untreated, cataracts can gradually lead to significant vision loss.

Causes of Cataract

Cataracts can develop due to several reasons, including:

  • Aging (most common cause)
  • Diabetes
  • Long-term exposure to sunlight (UV rays)
  • Eye injury or trauma
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption
  • Prolonged use of steroid medications
  • Family history of cataract

Types of Cataract

There are different types of cataracts, such as:

  • Nuclear Cataract: Affects the center of the lens and is age-related
  • Cortical Cataract: Appears as white, wedge-shaped opacities on the lens edges
  • Posterior Subcapsular Cataract: Develops at the back of the lens and affects near vision and reading
  • Congenital Cataract: Present at birth or develops during childhood

Diagnosis of Cataract

At B B Eye Foundation, cataracts are diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination, which may include:

  • Visual acuity test
  • Slit-lamp examination
  • Retinal examination
  • Measurement of eye pressure

Early diagnosis helps in timely treatment and better visual outcomes.

Cataract Treatment

The only effective treatment for cataract is surgery. In the early stages, stronger glasses, better lighting, and anti-glare lenses may help temporarily. However, when cataracts interfere with daily activities like reading, driving, or watching TV, surgery is recommended.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a safe and painless procedure in which the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). It is usually done as a day-care procedure, allowing patients to return home the same day.

Modern cataract surgery offers quick recovery and excellent vision improvement.

Diagnosis of Cataract

While cataracts cannot always be prevented, you can reduce the risk by:

  • Wearing sunglasses to protect from UV rays
  • Maintaining good blood sugar control if diabetic
  • Avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol
  • Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables
  • Getting regular eye check-ups
